Why Your Website Isn't Generating Clients (And How to Fix It)
Your website might look great, but is it actually generating clients? Discover the most common mistakes that drive visitors away and learn how to fix them with practical, proven techniques.

You've invested in a website. Maybe even quite a lot of money. The design looks polished, your logo is on it, and your contact details are easy to find. But still... the phone doesn't ring. The contact form stays empty. And that stream of new clients you were hoping for? It never comes.
You're not alone. More than 70% of Belgian SME websites underperform relative to their potential. Not because they're ugly, but because they weren't built to convert. In this article, we'll show you where things go wrong and, more importantly, how to fix it.

Mistake 1: No Clear Call-to-Action (CTA)
The number one mistake we see on websites: visitors don't know what to do. Your homepage is a wall of text, there are ten different buttons, and nowhere is the visitor clearly guided toward one single action.
How to fix it
- Choose one primary action per page. Do you want people to call? Request a quote? Schedule an appointment? Pick one and make it prominent.
- Use contrasting colours for your CTA buttons. They need to stand out visually.
- Place CTAs in strategic locations: above the fold, after each section, and at the bottom of the page.
- Use active, specific language. "Request your free audit" works better than "Click here" or "More info".
Mistake 2: Slow Loading Times
Did you know that 53% of mobile visitors leave a website if it takes longer than 3 seconds to load? Every extra second of loading time costs you conversions. Google also penalises slow websites in search results.
Common causes
- Unoptimised images (too large, wrong format)
- Too many plugins or scripts
- No caching configured
- Cheap hosting that can't handle the load
How to fix it
- Compress your images using tools like TinyPNG or WebP format.
- Use lazy loading so images only load when they come into view.
- Minimise your CSS and JavaScript — remove what you don't need.
- Invest in quality hosting. The cheapest option is rarely the best choice for a business website.
- Test regularly with Google PageSpeed Insights. Aim for a score of at least 80 on mobile.
Mistake 3: Poor Mobile Experience
In Belgium, more than 65% of web traffic comes from smartphones. Yet many websites are still designed for desktop and only made "responsive" as an afterthought.
Signs your mobile experience is falling short
- Text is too small to read without zooming
- Buttons are too close together and difficult to tap
- Menus don't work well on touchscreens
- Forms are frustrating to fill in on mobile
- Horizontal scrolling is required
How to fix it
- Design mobile-first. Start with the mobile version and then expand to desktop.
- Make buttons at least 44x44 pixels. That's the recommended tap size.
- Use a hamburger menu that opens and closes smoothly.
- Simplify forms on mobile. Only ask for what you truly need.
- Test on real devices, not just in the browser simulator.

Mistake 4: No Trust Signals
When a visitor lands on your website for the first time, they don't know you. There's no trust. And without trust, there's no conversion. You need to convince that visitor that you're reliable, professional and experienced.
Trust signals that work
- Client logos: Display the logos of companies you work with.
- Testimonials with photo and name: Anonymous reviews convince no one.
- Case studies: Show concrete results with figures.
- Certifications and badges: Google Partner, quality marks, industry associations.
- Clear contact details: VAT number, physical address, phone number. This shows you're a real business.
- Active social media links: An empty Facebook profile works against you. Only link if you're active.
The impact
Websites with trust signals convert on average 30-40% better than websites without. It's one of the easiest quick wins you can implement.
Mistake 5: Unclear Value Proposition
If a visitor doesn't understand within 5 seconds what you do and why they should choose you, you've lost them. Many websites start with vague sentences like "Welcome to our company" or "We offer tailored solutions."
How to fix it
- Answer three questions above the fold:
- What do you do?
- For whom?
- Why are you the best choice?
- Use specific language. "We increase your online revenue with data-driven Google Ads campaigns" is better than "We help businesses grow."
- Show results. Numbers convince: "Average 4x ROAS for our clients" says more than "We deliver results."
Mistake 6: No Conversion Path
Many websites are static brochures. They tell visitors about your company, but there's no logical path guiding a visitor through the website toward a conversion.
A good conversion path looks like this
- Grab attention with a strong headline and visual
- Name the problem the visitor can relate to
- Present the solution — your service or product
- Show social proof with testimonials and results
- Encourage action with a clear CTA and a low barrier
Practical tip
Look at your website as if you're visiting it for the first time. Can you take action within 3 clicks? Is it clear what the next step is? If you're unsure, your visitor is too.
The Diagnosis: Check Your Own Website
Take five minutes and answer these questions honestly:
- Is my primary CTA visible without scrolling?
- Does my website load in less than 3 seconds on mobile?
- Does my website work flawlessly on smartphone and tablet?
- Are there at least 3 trust signals on my homepage?
- Does a new visitor understand within 5 seconds what I do?
- Is there a logical path from landing to conversion?
Scoring less than 4 out of 6? Then you're guaranteed to be losing clients.
